Ways we use your dollars wisely:
Computers - computers are a major part of any modern school or educational center. In order to get the best value when investing in technology for the G. W. Adams Center, we do the following:
| We purchase used equipment from a company called Retrobox. Retrobox sells PCs for a fraction the cost of new machines. (www.retrobox.com). | |
| Instead of spending large sums of money on proprietary operating systems such as WindowsTM, we primarily use the free, open source "Linux" operating system. (www.linux.org). | |
| We accept gifts of donated software and put them to good use. We were donated a licensed copy of MicrosoftTM FrontPageTM 2000 several years ago. This website is maintained with that software as well as the free, open source web editor "NvU." |
Supplies:
| We accept donations of all manner of supplies from office furniture and paper to lumber and paint. These items save a great deal on the cost for restoration of the mansion and operation of the Center. | |
| We create "in house" wherever possible items for the mansion from bookshelves to structural support beams. |
Tools:
| We gladly accept and use donations of pre-owned tools. One such donation took the form of our primary lawn mower, a John Deere 285 lawn and garden tractor. | |
| We have accepted nearly $5,000 in tool donations in the past four years, from hand tools to table saws. |
Labor:
| We primarily use volunteer labor and educational classes of both youth and adults to do the actual work. Seldom is it necessary to use contractors unless there is a licensing issue. |
Tax-deductible donations of real property:
| We accept for re-sale any real property (capable of being re-sold - no liens) such as real-estate, furniture, automobiles, or any other manner of saleable property*. The re-sale of items we cannot directly use makes money for the operation of the educational center. |
These are just a few examples of the ways we keep costs down.

Ethnic heritage or national origin
Physical challenges
Religion or faith
Sexual preference or sexual identity

We strive to maintain policies inline with our core purpose of education and tolerance.
